FTL FUTBOL Premier Division

Almondsbury Town made certain of the Hellenic League title with their emphatic 6-1 drubbing of Ascot United today.  On target for the Almonds were Dean Griffiths with a pair, Lee Bridson, Dale Peckham, Sahr Kabba and Ross Stearn and scoring the Yellamen’s consolation was Sam McIntyre.  Shortwood United’s 3-0 win over Binfield puts them into the runner-up spot above close rivals Reading Town.  On target for the Wood were Matt Collins and Matt Bennett with an own goal completing the total.  A second half Jordan Ayris strike for Ardley United at lowly Carterton was enough to take the points.  High flyers, Flackwell Heath were easy 4-1 winners over second from bottom side Bicester Town, despite an early Dan Green opener for the Foxhunters.  Saving the day for the Heathens were Paul Shone, Stuart Maclellan, Lee Thompson and Ben Sturgess.  Basement club Hook Norton completed their league season on the end of a 6-2 mauling by Oxford City Nomads.  Lining up to score for the Nomads were Jermaine Ferreira with a brace, Mark Jones, Dan Jones, Troy Neenan and Ian Roper, and completing the scoreline for Hooky were Eric Laborieux and Pete Moulder.  Kidlington shared the points and four goals with Pegasus Juniors.  Mark Baker put the home side in front but strikes either side of the break from Cory Hyde and Chris Mortlock gave the visitors the advantage and it was left to an Adam Lovegrove equaliser in the final minute to even up the scores.    Shrivenham were turned over by relegation threatened Malmesbury Victoria, conceding three times without reply courtesy of the James’s Montague, McCarthy and Hambridge.  After being outclassed by Highworth Town in their midweek encounter, Wantage Town took their revenge with a comfortable 4-2 win.  Hitting the target for the Alfredians were Sean McKeon, Sam Belcher and Matt Biddle with a brace and replying for the Worthians were Richie Crocker and Rob Dean.

FTL FUTBOL Division One (West)

The chase for the Division One(West) title has become a three horse race between Headington Amateurs, Wootton Bassett Town and Slimbridge and with just two games remaining only three points separates the contenders.  Headington Amateurs were comfortable winners over Trowbridge Town, scoring three without reply thanks to an early Luke Cuff opener and a brace from Aftab Hafiz.  Wootton Bassett Town had to rely on a Ryan Thomas strike late in the game to take the points at Tytherington Rocks and Slimbridge were also comfortable victors at North Leigh, again, scoring three without reply courtesy of Lewis Wilton, Steve Badham and Joe Tustain.  Clanfield finished their campaign on a high after going behind to a 5th minute Adam O’Bree strike for Cricklade Town, but late goals from Adam Little and Craig Mays secured the points for the home side.  Letcombe took the lead at second-from-bottom Launton Sports when Pete Horswell hit the net after six minutes, but were stunned by a rampant Sports who took the points after netting four times through Dan Scourfield with a pair, Dan Sweeney and Paul Lisseter.  Purton’s season continued to unravel after losing to a solitary Luke Clarke effort for visitors, Lydney Town.

FTL FUTBOL Division One (East)

Thame United took the Division One(East) crown after putting three past visitors Eton Wick, courtesy of Mark Jones, Adam Rhodes and Adam Stallwood.

Chalfont Wasps conceded three without replying in their game against Chinnor.  On target for the visitors were Ryan Davis, Tim Rantle and Adam Brooks.  Didcot Town Reserves took the points after Sam Bishop scored just before half-time in their match with South Kilburn. Finchampstead won at home to Holyport after Dean Thomas scored the only goal of the game after 10 minutes. Kylo Atkinson scored the only two goals of the game for Henley Town against visitors, Rayners Lane.  Basement outfit Penn & Tylers Green were heading for a rare win after Roland Knight and Dan Lewis had given them a solid lead in their encounter with Milton United but strikes in the final eight minutes from Ryan Williams and Matt Stowell spoiled the party.  High flying new boys Woodley Town showed their excellent credentials with a 7-0 thrashing of Newbury.  In the queue for the turkey shoot were Luke Williams, Sam Cripps, Dan Jewell with a hat-trick and Carl Davies with a brace.

The Roving Reporter visits Oakland Park

Almondsbury Town 6-1 Ascot United

The Almonds went into this game today knowing  that a win would give them the title.  The Yellamen were unfortunate to have to play their therapist in goal.  It took only three minutes for the Almonds to open their account when Sahr Kabba worked in from the left, passed inside to Ross Stearn who then moved the ball on to Dean Griffiths to tap in at the far post.  15 minutes later, Neil Corbett brought down Ross Stearn just inside the penalty area but Stearn then put the resulting spot-kick wide. The Yellamen worked hard up front and through John Bennett, created a number of half-chances, but the Almonds settled themselves half way through the half when Lee Bridson converted a far post ball from a corner kick. This was followed two minutes later by a great dribble from Sahr Kabba before he hit the ball into the corner of the goal for the third.  Right on half-time Dean Griffiths picked up a short pass from Stearn, rounded a defender and slotted home the fourth.  The second half saw the Almonds easing up on the pressure slightly to better control the game.  The 5th came in the 63rd minute from a Stearn free-kick by the corner flag which found Dale Peckham alone on the far post to head in.  The Yellamen finally struck halfway through the half with a break down the left which saw Sam McIntyre convert the pulled back ball.  Ten minutes later though the Almonds restored their five goal advantage when a long ball over the top was latched on to by Ross Stearn who hammered it past keeper Andy Gavin.  So the long season ends with the Almonds assured of the Hellenic League Championship crown.
