FTL FUTBOL Premier Division

In the big match of the day, the top two sides, Reading Town and Almondsbury Town had to settle for a draw. Graham Lewis put the home side into the lead early in the second half but Lee Jefferies redressed the balance after 72 minutes. Flackwell Heath had to wait until the final ten minutes to secure the points in their fixture with lowly Carterton. Callum Coull gave them an early lead which was cancelled out by Chris Zoldan’s reply just before half-time. Riccardo Cannon then slotted home the winner late in the game. Highworth Town were worthy winners over Abingdon Town. They might have scored many more but Steve Robertson with two and Rob Dean had made certain of the victory before Ben Ellwood found the net for the visitors. Strugglers Malmesbury Victoria were caned by a rampant and free-scoring Shortwood United. On target for the Wood were Matt Collins with a hat-trick, Alton Axton with a pair, Ryan Preddy and Andy Hoskins. Pegasus Juniors strolled past Marlow United, netting half a dozen times courtesy of Rich Harrison and Chris Mortlock with two a piece, Jamie Cuss and Ryan Daw. There were consolation strikes from Wayne Murphy and Gary Wiltshire completing the score-line for the visitors. Shrivenham were given a lesson in scoring by the unpredictable Ardley United. Adam Garner with two, Jason Castello, Murray Nicholls and Andy Stidder all found the net for the visitors with Alex Green replying for Shrivvy’s consolation. Wantage Town needed a late penalty from Gary Swann to rescue a point in their match against the in-form Oxford City Nomads. This was after Adam Morris had given the visitors a half-time lead. Witney United took the points from struggling Fairford Town with a goal in each half from Chris Harper and Andy Younie.

FTL FUTBOL Division One (West)

The division’s big match between the top two sides, saw Wootton Bassett Town’s promotion hopes given a welcome boost after a close victory over title challengers, Slimbridge. Jon Holloway had given the Wiltshire side a half-time lead which was quickly cancelled out by Joe Tustain’s reply. However, Sam Collier put Bassett back into the lead and the Swans were unable to respond, despite every effort.

Basement outfit Cirencester United suffered a 3-1 reverse at home to title chasers Cheltenham Saracens. Jamie Hammond with two and Sonnie Burrows scored for the visitors with Rich Miles netting for United. Easington Sports were comfortable winners against Tytherington Rocks, scoring twice without reply. Headington Amateurs took the points from visitors, Cricklade Town after Luke Cuff and Shaun Jacobs had hit the target either side of the half-time break. North Leigh Reserves were eventual winners over the improving Launton Sports. Gary Wright gave the home side a first-half lead but this was countered by Matt Green’s quick reply in the second period. Will Smalldon’s 85th minute effort separated the two sides. Purton’s title challenge is all but over after losing at home to Letcombe. Paul Roberts with a pair, Mark Denny and Lyle Gifford had all hit the target before Jonny Coole and Tom Cadden were able to reply for the Red House outfit. Winterbourne United were comfortable winners over Trowbridge Town, scoring four times without reply thanks to Mark Totterdell, Ben Rhodes and Sam Vile with a brace

FTL FUTBOL Division One (East)

In the division’s big match, 3rd placed Woodley Town lost narrowly to 2nd placed Wokingham & Emmbrook. Richard Bland’s first half effort for the visitors was cancelled out by an own goal mid-way through the second period but manager’s son Shaun Wanklyn popped up to score the winner for the Satsuma’s in the 85th minute.

Thame United consolidated their position as ‘Champions’ at lowly Newbury after going behind to a Dan Lachacz strike. Adam Stallwood with two, Aaron Rogers and Luke Ricketts were all on hand to secure the points for the league leaders.

Holyport were 3-0 up after 20 minutes at Chinnor, thanks to two very quick goals from Lee Jerrum and one from Lee Hawkins. Gary Marshall got one back for the home side mid-way through the second period but this proved to be too little too late to affect the outcome.

Finchampstead were two goals down to visitors Chalfont Wasps at the break thanks to strikes from Liam O’Neill and Danny Mokes but they must have had rocket fuel added to the half-time tea as they romped away with the points, scoring half a dozen times in the second period, courtesy of Junior Arquimbau, Gary Sargeant, Rob Yorke-Goldney and a Dean Thomas hat-trick. Rayners Lane scored twice without reply in their match with Didcot Town. On target for Lane with a goal in each half were Darren Gardiner and Dean Ryan. Eric Hamilton’s 77th minute goal for South Kilburn was all that separated them from visitors, Milton United.

Witney ‘Pull the Plug’ on ‘Ressies’

After discussions at various levels within the club the difficult decision has been made to withdraw the Reserves from the league. More and more availability had become a problem for manager Darren Teggart especially with the vast majority of the team doubling up as the Allied Counties youth team

Commenting on the decision Chairman Steve Lake made the following statement; "It is with deep regret that Witney United Football Club have made the decision to withdraw our Reserve side from Reserve Division Two West. With injuries and the unavailability of players it was becoming more and more difficult to fulfil fixtures and the club had already been the subject of two fines for postponing fixtures. To be fair to the league and all the other teams in the competition we feel that withdrawing the side is the right and proper thing to do. Witney United Football Club will be hoping to field a side in the Reserve section next season".

Wootton Bassett Town 2-1 Slimbridge

This game was important in the context of the title race and possible promotion to the Premier Division. Wootton Bassett Town needed to prevent Slimbridge from winning and pulling away at the top.  It took only three minutes for Bassett to take the lead when a ball in from the left beat everybody and found Jon Holloway on the far post to tap in. The Swans then worked their way into the game and passed the ball around well but couldn’t get anybody on the end of the final ball in the six yard box. Bassett mostly used the long ball and fast breaks for strikers Craig Shand and Sam Collier to chase and work hard for. The nearest the Swans came to getting an equalizer in the first half was from a free kick in the final minute taken by Joe Tustain which keeper Stuart Thompson did well to tip over.

Half Time: 1 – 0

Two minutes into the second half the Swans were level when Joe Tustain hit a volley from 25 yards out which flew into the top corner of the net. The Swans then continued to press for the lead but seven minutes later a long ball down the right hand side found Sam Collier who hit a first time lob over the helpless Swans’ keeper to regain the lead for Bassett.  The Swans threw players forward as Bassett dropped back to defend their lead. In the end it was the Bassett defence that held firm to win for the home side causing the title race to close up again.
